Course of action development in the military refers to devising ways of implementing an issued command. Course of action development is usually done in military operations to conform to a political purpose. Military operations are usually conducted in uncertain environment to enhance security of a country (ADP 5-0, 2019). Course of action development begin with an assessment of fundamentals for the military operation where proper mechanisms are arranged with regard to the purpose of the military operation. The fundamentals of operation step entail analysing the strength of the enemies to encounter in the military operation. An operation sergeant major during the fundamentals of operation step helps to determine the threat posed by the enemy with regard to their number and armoury. The second step in course of action development is planning step where operational variables are analysed to strategize reliable counter actions (ATP 2-01.3, 2019). At this stage, as an operation sergeant major, the number of forces and armoury needed for the military operation is determined.
The third step in course of action development is the preparation stage where guidelines on how the military operation is to be executed (ADP 5-0, 2019). The forces to take part in the military operation are briefed on all the details of the purported operations. As an operation sergeant major, during the preparation stage different duties are assigned to different forces depending on their areas of expertise. The last step in the course of action is the execution stage where the actual military operation is carried out. At this stage, actual plans and actions to be taken are laid down and issued to the relevant forces. An operation sergeant major should give guidelines on how to sketch a proper execution map that would guide the forces to attack their enemies without being noticed or discovered.
