Introduction 

The world has witnessed a myriad of challenges as a result of the onset of civilization. One of the significant problems that people have grappled with in the modern world is crime. As a result, most governments have come up with stringent strategies that are aimed at making the world a safer place. Some of the courses that have been developed to tackle crime are criminology as well as criminal justice. This paper takes a deep insight into some crucial factors such as job description, salary and career trajectory that are enshrined in careers in criminology and criminal justice. 

Some of the images that are associated with criminology are cars, guns, cuffs, and badges. Most people are of the opinion that careers in criminology and criminal justice encompass crime scenes and law enforcement (Roufa, 2018) . However, these two careers are far more significant and incorporate many things apart from crime scenes and law enforcement. Indeed, it is a herculean task to pin criminology and criminal justice to a specific industry or subject (Roufa, 2018). In nearly every career specialty or degree program, there is always a criminological component.

Criminology and Criminal Justice 

Criminology is a sociological subject that delves into all levels and aspects of crime in the society. Additionally, criminology also enshrines the causal agents of crime as well as the consequences of crime. Furthermore, criminology even tries to measure the manner in which the society responds to crime and the ways that can be used to prevent crime and related vices n the society (Study.com, 2018) . On the other hand, criminal justice is the application of criminology in the nation. Some of the main components that characterize criminal justice are correctional facilities, courts and law enforcement officers. 

Job Description 

Criminologists and criminal justice officers’ job include many tasks. One of the main functions that are undertaken by them is the collection and examination of evidence. About the collection of evidence, they can also visit scenes of crime to analyze and gather evidence. Additionally, they go ahead to investigate the psychological causes of crime starting from the investigations all the way through conviction and at times rehabilitation (Roufa, the balance careers, 2017) . A certain number of special skills are needed in criminology and criminal justice. The most vital ability is communication. Those in the fields must be capable of expressing solutions, findings, and theories both in writing and also verbally (Roufa, the balance careers, 2017). The ability to navigate the internet and computer proficiency. Apart from those, public speaking skills are also an added advantage to criminologists and those in criminal justice. 

Salary and Wages 

There are various career paths in criminology and criminal justice. However, the starting salary for a criminologist is $40,000 while that of criminal justice is $36,000 (Prospects, 2018) . The maximum wage is about $70,000 in both whereas the national average salary for both careers is about $55,000 (Prospects, 2018). Due to the technical and mind-boggling tasks that those in those professions undertake, they are usually entitled to some additional benefits such as pension up in retirement and medical benefits. 

Career Trajectory 

Criminology and criminal justice offer favorable prospects for graduates as well as those undertaking the course in universities. Both careers have different entry-level positions. Despite the many career prospects, some graduates take an eternity to get jobs. On the positive side, criminology and criminal justice provide good career prospects and opportunities for growth advancement. Some of the career available in criminology are those of investigators and detectives, legal secretaries, paralegals and probation officers (CareerProfiles.info, 2018) . Those who have studies criminal justice can become polygraph examiners, police officers or loss prevention specialists. 

In conclusion, it is vital to reiterate that both criminology and criminal justice are of great importance to the society. These are the career paths that ensure that crime and related vices are kept at bay in the community. Criminal justice and criminology offer the best prospects for students aspiring to pursue them and advance in their careers.
