Power Distance

The power distance dimension refers to the extent to which the less powerful members of the institution and entities in a country are expected and accept the equal distribution of power—the dimension helps express the attitude of people within a country towards inequalities among them. In China, power distance is ranked as 80, while in the United States, it is 40. Chinese society tends to believe that disparity among people is accepted. There is a polarization of superior-subordinate relationships with no defense for power abuse in China than in the United States of America.

Individualism

Individualism is defined as the degree of interdependence maintained among members of a given society. The dimension helps in determining whether people consider themselves as "I" or "we." In China, the dimension is ranked as 20. China has a collectivist culture where people act in the interest of the group as opposed to the United States, where it is rated at 91. This implies that in the United States, individuals only look after themselves and their direct families.

Masculinity

The masculinity dimension refers to the society where people are driven by competition, achievement, and success. The aspect illustrates how males and females are valued and perceived in society. In China, masculinity is ranked as 66, implying that people in the community are success-oriented and driven. The majority of the Chinese tend to sacrifice families and leisure and prioritize work. It is almost the same case in the United States, where the dimension is ranked as 62.

Personal Experience

One of the instances I experienced cross-cultural communication was when I was working on a foreign nation. I often used translators to communicate with my colleagues, who did not understand English. To avoid misunderstandings, I opted to learn the new language and make communication all easy and smooth among us.

One of the most effective strategies to minimize cross-cultural misunderstanding is by appreciating cultural differences and learning other people's cultures. This helps in respecting one another and understanding from other people's perspectives.
