Outlining the Issue to be presented

The problem to be presented is the cultural influences in sport and recreation. Within our global society, moving from one country to another is considered a regular occurrence. Therefore, this trend helps in determining how global migration can influence the recreation facility and local sport, as well as event development. Usually, cultural influences do occur at both the introduction as well as participation stages of the sports continuum ( Eime, Harvey, Sawyer, Craike, Symons & Payne, 2016) . It implies that individuals are either not participating in sports at all or even as a result of certain competitive situations.

Factors making it be an Important Issue

Cultural influences on sports and recreation is an essential issue since it helps us in understanding how the culture of a given country can develop the norms of acceptable behavior on a given team, either through implicitly or explicitly conveyed to the team members what is not allowed and what is allowed. Such standards have the potential of dictating to the team members concerning how they can communicate, cooperate, behave, or even deal with conflicts ( Hoye, Smith, Nicholson & Stewart, 2018). Besides, when there are established explicit norms by a particular country, then everyone on a sports team is more likely to abide by them.

Additionally, this issue also helps in understanding how cultural changes as a result of global migration influences local sport. It is because all of these cultural qualities have significant implications for how the local sports team functions, how team members are getting along, and mainly, how individual sports team’s members are performing and the outcome they get ( Chelladurai & Kerwin, 2018). It is imperative in understanding that when there is a defined culture within a sports team that can easily be understood by all the team members, then they would have no choice but have an implicit pressure of supporting that particular culture.

Potential Consequences of this Issue

The global migration has significant consequences to the local sport, recreation activity, and event development due to varying cultural influences. Cultural influences, as a result of global migration, may have substantial consequences as it impacts the patterns of local sports and recreation. Participating in sports and recreation among different cultures varies by tradition, rituals, and group. Generally, those with different cultures would often experience a history of being excluded from participating in organized local sports and recreation, as well as event activities ( Storm, Thomsen & Jakobsen, 2017). Today, few popular local sports are having a higher percentage of cultural minorities, with others being entirely absent. Besides, even when there are high rates of participation, those from countries with cultural minorities would always be excluded from positions of power in local sports, recreation, and events, including management and coaching at the collegiate, professional, and youth levels.

Research conducted by Hoye, Smith, Nicholson and Stewart (2018) have determined that negative stereotypes associated with different cultural influences, as well as other social categorizations are common in local sports and can result in performance decrements. It also indicates that cultural diversity training in local sports is almost entirely absent, which has resulted in many sports professionals lacking the understanding of cultural diversity.

Necessary Actions

Sports and recreation professionals can take necessary actions for mitigating or addressing this issue. It can be achieved by allowing the local sport team members to travel abroad with the intention of being immersed within a different culture. For instance, programs such as Sports Service Adventure would utilize the shared passion of teens for sports and soccer for learning as well as connecting with the local communities ( Eime, Harvey, Sawyer, Craike, Symons & Payne, 2016). It is because the program would provide team members with an opportunity of living in a different country and establishing new friendships with the local sport team members through a shared passion for sports.

Additionally, sports and recreation professionals should consider teaching rules that the local team members can live by. Among the significant rules that can be learned with sports is that of sportsmanship, in addition to admiring and respecting your teammates and opponents alike. When this output is taken and applied to the world, it allows the local sports teams in perceiving different people and culture as equals, regardless of their education or cultural backgrounds ( Storm, Thomsen & Jakobsen, 2017). For instance, athletic activity can help in establishing a foundation to live by, which can significantly assist in shaping the world in positive ways as a result of bringing all cultures together through a shared passion of sports.

How the Issue Relates to Facility and Event Management

The cultural influences in sports and recreation are related to facility and event management as it helps to manage the informal sport and event participation. It is because facility and event management usually examines how informal sport can be used for increasing sports participation among different cultures. It is crucial to understand that local sport has always been a contested concept that non-government and government agencies are grappling when it comes to event management ( Eime, Harvey, Sawyer, Craike, Symons & Payne, 2016). Today, facility and event managers are seriously considering how local sport and cultural diversity can be positioned as a central aspect in efforts of responding to the objectives of participating in local sporting events associated with different cultures as well as policy agendas. Besides, drawing on the concept from collaborative event management, it can be concluded that changes to both practices and culture in the systems of sport development are needed for harnessing the likeliness of informal and local sports participation.
