One of the challenges befalling the healthcare industry is nurse shortage. The shortage is caused by many factors, including the ageing population, inadequate educators, high turnover, the ageing nurses’ workforce and nurse burnout (Haddad et al., 2020). However, nurses are continuously leaving their places of work at a higher rate than the rate at which the hospitals are replacing them. This has resulted in the understaffing of hospitals with the left nurses being overworked and burnout, among other factors. This has resulted in poor performance. A strategic plan is, therefore needed to curb the problem. The strategies include improved communications in the nursing industry; more investments should be channeled towards nursing education, creating a good work environment for nurses. A good work environment will make the nurses comfortable, enhance respect and teamwork in hospitals (Clark, 2016), and the improvement of the healthcare system by coming up and implementing policies and regulations that favor nurses. According to Kunie et al. (2017), good communication and nurse engagement can improve motivation; thus, low nurse turnover.
To make the implementation of the strategies, various possible resources are needed. The resources include government funding by giving nursing students education loans. Secondly, hospital resources should be channeled towards the nurses’ welfare such as giving of incentives. Thirdly, social media platforms such as TV, twitter, Instagram and twitter to launch the nursing profession and advertise vacancies in nurse training schools so as to train adequate nurses. Also, there is a need for technological equipment to reduce the nurses’ workload. According to Opel et al. (2017), there should be a human resource whose work will be to develop policies and regulations helpful in curbing nurse shortage.
