The Surgeon’s General report by the US Department of Health and Human Services (2012) offers excellent insights into the dangers of tobacco use among youths and young adults. The 2012 report reviews information explicitly from previous reports on tobacco, tabling evidence on the dangers of tobacco use, the causes of tobacco addiction, how various companies contribute to tobacco use among youths, and the efforts that can be applied in preventing tobacco use among teens and young adults. The report recognizes the fact that most first-time tobacco use occurs among the youths, specifically at age 26, while others start at adolescents to become smokers at adult age. Similarly, a quarter and a third of high school seniors and young adults respectively participate in active smoking. 

The report analyzes various health consequences of tobacco use in youths, which include the possible use of marijuana, addiction, and lung problems, among others. Further to that, this report tables facts on epidemiology tobacco use in young adults and youths. On this note, the report concludes that most smokers start to use at senior levels of high school. Moreover, youths with lower socioeconomic status tend to be more smokers.

The report concludes that smoking in youths and young adults causes serious health problems. Similarly, this report recommends that efforts to prevent tobacco use should mostly target adolescents and young adults. The report also blames marketing activities by tobacco sellers to be a key reason behind smoking in youths and young adults and that interventions should be made to counter this. The government should specifically impose tax increases and other interventions to discourage tobacco smoking. The report also recognizes the existence of genetic influences in tobacco use. In addition to that, the influence of the tobacco industry in influencing young adults and youths to smoke is greatly discussed in the report.
