Which author focuses on economic explanation, and which author focuses on cultural explanation to explain imperialist support for annexation?

The economic argument used to explain imperialists support for annexation focused on factories, which were being frequently established. Additionally, there was a high rate of workers being employed within the industry, and this contributed significantly to the economic argument for annexation. The main sectors, which were being focused on, were the agriculture and the industries. There was an overproduction of goods from the industries, and this forced the manufactures to look for markets in Asia and China. The imperialist considered the Philippines as a place where American can develop their skills and ability to govern.

Do you think the author’s arguments are contradictory or complementary, in other words, can they be both correct?
