When creating a speech, it is important to have a deeper understanding of your audience to serve their interests. A speaker needs to critically evaluate their demographic and psychographic characteristics when creating a speech. Below are some demographic and psychographic factors that help a speaker create a meaningful speech for the audience.

Age is an important demographic factor to consider in creating a speech. Members of similar age groups have similar experiences, enabling them to exhibit similar values, beliefs, and attitudes. Therefore, when creating a speech, one needs to be aware of their own biases to avoid ageism, resulting in stereotyping of your audience (Guaqueta & Castro-Garces, 2018). The young generation, for example, has introduced lingo and slang into their language, which, is used to the older generation, will render the speech ineffective to the audience.

Gender is the second demographic factor which must be considered when developing a speech. When preparing a speech, one should consider the masculinity of femininity gender of the audience. Through this, the speaker will use inclusive language to give the audience a positive attitude towards the speech. The speaker should use gender-neutral language to avoid genderism ( Zhang, Ardasheva & Austin, 2020) . Gender-neutral words will enable a speaker to guard against gender discrimination and stereotyping the audience.

The attitude of the audience is a psychographic factor to consider in a speech. A particular audience's attitude towards certain topics is based on their beliefs and lifestyle ( Zhang, Ardasheva & Austin, 2020) . A speaker must get background information that will likely affect their attitude towards a given subject through informal interactions with the audience before the speech will help you adjust accordingly and tailor a speech to the audience's preference.

Age, gender, and the audience's attitude greatly affect the effectiveness of our speech. Therefore, getting background information from the audience will guide you when creating a good speech.
