Communication is seen as one of the essential parts of human life, as it creates a platform through which people can interact. Communication is not always represented through verbal communication but can also be non-verbal in which people communicate without the use of words; instead, using signs and behaviors. In non-verbal communication, what is expected that the persons involved would seek to use different types of gestures that help in conveying a specific message to another individual? Kinesics is considered as the study of body gestures, motions, and behaviors that allow for non-verbal communication. The five critical types of gestures that can be associated with kinesics are emblems, illustrators, regulators, adaptors, and affect displays. Each of these gestures represents a different aspect related to the process of non-verbal communication and its ability to convey the expected message.

Emblems

Emblems refer to a type of body movements that can be translated directly from verbal communication, which makes them stand alone without having to engage in any other kind of connection. While on my way to the beach to meet up with some of my friends, I came across pedestrians as I was trying to find the right place to park. I stopped my car in a bid to allowing them to cross the road. As the pedestrians were passing, I observed their body movements and behaviors to see whether they would communicate. One of the persons raised his hand as a sign of gratitude based on my act and did not have to use words to describe. As I was parking, I saw a photographer who was taking pictures of a couple on the beach. As they were checking on the photographs, the couple did the "ok" sign as a form of communication.

Illustrators

Illustrators refer to gestures that would often accompany the use of words or verbal communication. In my walk through the beach, I was able to make observations of the use of illustrators as part of enhanced communication. I observed a man that was giving directions to a child. Above his use of words to describe the course, the man also used gestures to show the exact route that the child would be expected to go where he would point to specific things that the child would look for. I found my friends seated at a nearby restaurant, and immediately I walked in, one of the waitresses asked how many we were. One of my friends counted use using pointing gestures while counting out loud to suggest the use of illustrators.

Regulators

Regulators refer to a type of gestures that are considered as being primarily unintentional. In this type of gesture, the main idea is that individuals seek to control, adjust, or even sustain a conversation. While at the restaurant, a couple that was seated on the next table was visibly fighting. I took note of the fact that the lady was moving her eyes in a manner that suggested her disapproval of whatever the man was saying. I also observed another couple that was two tables away from use where the lady was shaking her head as the man talked seemingly to suggest that she was listening to the conversation. Both couples sought to highlight the use of regulators as part of the communication process.

Adaptors

Adaptors refer to gestures that are often undertaken with little awareness on the apart of the individuals engaging such actions. After taking a few drinks, I decided to go to the restroom to relieve myself. As I was coming out of the bathroom, I observed that one was my friend who was swinging his leg, clearly unaware of the fact that he was engaging in such an action. Additionally, I also took note of the fact that another friend was drumming the table using his fingers while listening to the conversation that was going on. Although both friends did not use verbal communication to pass on their messages, I believed that their lack of awareness concerning their actions suggested that they were experiencing restlessness and needed to leave soon. As I was sitting down, I asked the friend who was drumming whether we should go for which he answered to the affirmative.

Affect Displays

Affect displays refers to gestures that are driven or motivated by emotions. Depending on the feelings, one is able to show different affect displays that would serve as an avenue through which to communicate specific messages. After we had left the restaurant, we took a walk on the beach where we were approached by a lady with a big smile, who tried to convince us to buy some of the wares that she was selling. The use of the smile as an affect display that sought to suggest that she was kind and genuine in her decision to approach us. As I was going to my car, I observed a man holding a ticket with a frown on his face, which sought to suggest that he was unhappy with the decision by an officer to give him the ticket.
