Veterans face a significant problem in that they lack proper healthcare. Nations depend on soldiers, sailors, and airmen to ensure safety. However, considering most of these patriots are on active duty without adequate healthcare coverage for both the physical and mental ailments, one is left to wonder what role the governments take to ensure an appropriate compensation. At the center of addressing the veteran healthcare issue is the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which is a military organization run by the government and supported with the level of cabinets. The responsibility of the department is the administration of veteran programs that not only aim to benefit the veterans, but also the families and survivors. The benefits include disability compensation and other features including education and home loans. Veterans dedicated their lives to promoting and fighting for the nation hence it is only right that the VA put in place measures that provide free healthcare to the war heroes.

Failure of the VA

The world is rife with different ailments and getting access to medical care that is timely especially for veterans can solve the existing gap between life and death matters. The past decades were marred with delays and corruption, which went on inside the Veteran Affairs Health Care administration that led to some people never getting the chance to be attended to. A good example is the Phoenix, where an estimated over forty veterans died in the process of waiting to see a doctor. At the center of the growing issue is the increased number of veterans in need of medication. As a result, hospitals are overcrowded leading to many opting to venture into private hospitals and institutions to avoid cases of uncertainty on whether they will receive treatment for their ailment or not ( Work, Theo & ReedBS, 2013) . Ironically, the very institutions set up to look after the welfare of the veterans are at the center of denying them their rights.

Funding

Regardless of the current president Donald Trump touting the expansion program of the veteran’s healthcare during the signing of the VA Mission Act 2018 (VAMA) into law, funding the publicized expansion is similar to fighting in a bipartisan plan whose estimated cost is $50 billion in addition to the current VA spending. Indeed, the signing of the executive order calls for support of the veterans during the transition to civilian life, and as such, encompasses the working together of the different institutions to secure the healthcare for all new veterans in the first year of their discharge. As per the order, everyone is eligible hence it eliminates the bias of different individuals ( Gordon, 2018) . The VA has different options in ensuring they offer free healthcare services to the veterans, they include;

Outsourcing Certain Types of Care

The VA could save a lot of resources by having surgical and related patient services outsourced to other institutions. The cost-effectiveness will be present regardless of whether the VA finances the outsourcing process or not. Furthermore, the process would help improve the quality and reduce the rate of time lags that often end up harming the veterans instead of helping them (Longman, 2012) . The process could also utilize incentive shared opinions involving the patients to help better the treatment process. Firms outsource where they feel they would fail in the service delivery. The same case is applicable in that, by VA deciding to outsource, it becomes easy to deal with the overcrowding issue in the healthcare department.

Reduce Dual Use

Through the elimination of different systems and relying on a single unit, taxpayers can increase cost-effectiveness due to the exclusion of the duplication system. Furthermore, by limiting a patient’s information to a single system, it becomes possible to fully view and analyze the medical records of a veteran hence administer the appropriate medication. Furthermore, by incentivizing, veterans get the option of choosing whether to use VA or non-VA healthcare depending on how attractive the Medicare process is (Miller, 2012) . Like any system, financing the free healthcare process requires funding. Hence, finding a way of cutting down the cost involved in the process also guarantees a successful outcome for both the society and the veterans.

Conclusion

Veterans’ healthcare comes from different multiple systems and programs hence they have the option of comparing and selecting one they deem to be most efficient as per their financial status and willpower. Options for those seeking non-VA systems are diverse and are set to evolve further. However, the VA will always have a responsibility of ensuring the veterans are well taken care of. In the first place, they were in the service of their governments hence it is the government responsibility to provide healthcare to such people for free. As stipulated above, government administrators and policymakers have a duty of passing legal aspects that could help promote the wellbeing of the veterans. As the only way of giving thanks to such people for helping keep the nation safe, ensuring the welfare via educational systems, home loans, and business incentives could go a long way in making sure they have a better life after the war. Going to war distorts what people perceive as normal or right, hence by ensuring proper medication is available, it becomes possible for the society also to be safe from sudden outbursts.
