Introduction

The breakthrough in various emergent technologies such as in the wireless communication technology has actually been a history in the making. The evolution in the wireless communication technology can be traced back from the works of a German physicist Rudolph Hertz. Hertz started experimenting on wireless communication technology as a laboratory device in testing Maxwell’s theories that focused on electromagnetic waves. Through his experiments, Hertz developed reliable methods of measuring electromagnetic waves (Crowley & Heyer, 2015). The domain of wireless communication technology was further expanded by Marconi through the development of wireless telegraphy. Marconi's motive was to generate financial backing for the application of electromagnetic waves to be used in remote locations such as ships or lighthouses where wired telegraphy could not be used. For researchers to enhance the effectiveness of wireless telegraphy there was a need to device a new functionality of distance to enhance the power of receivers and increase the sensitivity of receivers. It was as a result of further research to determine a new functionality of distance that ultimately led to the development of the vacuum tube.

Development of Wireless Technology

The development of the vacuum tube was the significant breaking point in the further development of the wireless communication technology as it provided the basis for continuous wave transmitter. The vacuum tube technology allowed for the development of wireless telephony and broadcast radio. The technology of wireless telephony initial use was for public and safety purposes such as police and emergency services before it penetrated into mainstream consumer markets in recent years.

It is through the development of the three domains discussed above that a tremendous and extraordinary change in a new course and further discoveries in wireless communication technology has been witnessed. It is, therefore, true to say that the dramatic breakthroughs have been made possible due to the fact that the three domains interacted effectively and efficiently. In cases where wave transmitters and efforts to enhance distance and clarity of wireless telegraphy were absent, then broadcast radio and wireless telephony could not have been developed. The development of wireless communication technology could be a result of the discontinuities in wireless communication. Such discontinuities made predecessors of wireless communication such as Hertz to provide communication services where none existed before instead of developing new technologies for existing services. The breakthrough in wireless communication involved investment in a lot of time and financial resources from various researchers to ensure that the new technology out-competes existing communication technologies. The relative advantage of the new technology was looked upon in terms of performance criteria and in terms of functionality or cost-effectiveness.

The development in wireless communication technology is further attributed to shifts in application domains of laboratory device, wireless telegraphy, and wireless telephony and broadcast radio. The shifts in the application of the three domains enabled the development of wireless communication technology as they signaled a shift in selection criteria which enabled effective evaluation of the technology (Crowley, & Heyer, 2015). It is through the availability of new resources in the application domains that the communication world has been able to witnessed and efficient form of wireless communication which is quite distinct. Furthermore, research works of the different domains discussed framed communication technology in terms of speciation which proved useful in differentiating the technology in terms of technical development and market application. It is only through the differentiated distinction that wireless communication researchers and scientists are able to understand patterns of technological change useful in technology management.

Conclusion

Though it proves difficult or unlikely for a new development in technology to dominate an established technology in the primary domain of application, the development in recent communication technology has helped outperform refined wired systems in terms of functionality and flexibility.
