Question 1

The first principle of adult learning is autonomy and self-direction. Here, I must take into consideration the need to actively involve the adults in the learning process and act as a facilitator as opposed to a fact generator. I would begin by gaining the perspective of the learners with regards to the issue of obesity and how they perceive the importance of exercise, lifestyle changes, and proper nutrition. Secondly, adults learning is goal oriented. In this regards, I must ensure that my lesson on obesity is well organized and has defined elements. Thirdly, adults education is practical oriented and as such, availing videos and organizing physical activities to demonstrate the importance of exercise in obesity would be essential. Adult learning is relevancy oriented, and information must show relevance to them. As such, I will have to tie obesity to the health concern it is today. Lastly, adult learners must be shown respect by acknowledging their knowledge and experiences.

Question 2

In creating a health education program that addresses obesity among elementary school children, I will ensure that the learning process is active and exciting. Unlike in adults where learning must have relevance to their needs, children require facts to be presented in an interesting way such as displaying charts about obesity and asking them to exercise in emphasizing its importance in managing obesity. Prior knowledge is also vital in their learning process. As an instructor, I will ensure that I assess the knowledge of the children regarding obesity. This might not be necessary for adult students who already have immense experience and education in obesity. Preparation is also essential for younger learners who must understand why obesity is relevant to their knowledge. Adults are well versed with obesity and already appreciate its relevance to their health well-being. Individuality is another principle vital to child learning. As I instruct the students regarding obesity, I must take cognizance of their individual learning needs as opposed to adults who can adapt to changing learning environments. As the instructor, I must ensure that a stable relationship between myself and the learner is established in building rapport towards a fruitful appreciation of obesity.
