After the end of the Second World War, organizations such as the United Nations have been working to improve the well-being of the people around the world. Ideally this has been done by formulating plans and strategies to help in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural or humanitarian nature and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights for fundamental freedoms regardless of their race, sex, language or religion (Promote Sustainable Development, 2017, 1). In this regard NGOs have been working to improve the people’s well-being and this has had major impacts on people’s lives. These efforts are referred to as the development theories and are meant to improve the well-being of the society and countries as whole. This essay aims to highlight the application of the development theories to Colombia as a country.
Colombia is a South American country that is composed of diverse population; there are indigenous Indians, Spanish and people of African America origin in this country. Typically the country has been suffering from decades of long violent conflict involving outlawed armed groups, drug cartels and gross violations of human rights (Colombia Country Profile, 2018, 1). The country can utilize the development theories to improve its situation and the well-being of the people.

For the purposes of improving the livelihoods for the people the country should consider implementing the modernization theory to foster economic development. Considering the country has been in conflict for many decades mist of its population is suffering because of poverty and poor economic situation. It is feared that poverty breeds political instability (Promote Sustainable Development, 2017, 1). Therefore, for the sake of having lasting peace, Colombia should work on implementing the modernization theory. When there is modernization, equality and balance in resources peace would be achieved effectively.
Colombia can use the dependency theory to improve on its structural factors to help maintain a development trend within its systems and structures (Eckl, 2007, 2). Through this theory Colombia would source for raw material from its immediate neighbors or those from nearby region before going too far of countries for the same supplies. They can also import labor and other items that would be used to economically rebuild this state (Zoellick, 2010, 2). Seeking for financial and political support from ally countries would also help in rebuilding this country.
Democratization would allow Columbia to enact policies that would bring economic, security and development sustainability even without seeking for external support. This would be necessary because it would help Colombia focus on international imbalance and concentrate in providing its people with the right of development. Such rights recognize that human person are the central subject of development, citizens have responsibility to development, and right to development is a human right among other (Assembly, 1996, 4).
