Operating systems are defined by the International Standards Organization as “a system of programs which control the performance of programs in a computational environment” (Attila, 2013). There are currently four major operating systems in the world; Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Unix and Linux. These four operating systems achieve the same goal, but are very different. The following is a comparison of these four operating systems.
Microsoft Windows are operating systems that are made, marketed and sold by the Microsoft Company (Attila, 2013). Windows 8, the successor to the highly thriving Windows 7, is currently one of Microsoft’s relatively new OS. Windows 8 is meant for use on both conventional personal computers, and tablets. This new OS came with a lot of changes, including a shift of the Start button from the taskbar, being instead replaced with a Start page. The OS is also made in such a way as to handle newer technologies, such as USB 3.0 devices.
