Directional strategies are both a portion of the strategy formulation as well as situational analysis. The strategies comprise vision, values, goals, and mission and they define the prevailing state of the organization. They also codify the organization’s philosophy as well as beliefs. Other than describing the prevailing state of the organization and codifying the philosophy of the organization, these values, goals, mission as well as vision also form a part of strategy formulation. This is because they play a critical role in setting the boundaries as well as indicating the organization’s broadest direction. Because of this role, organizational goals, values, vision, and mission are referred to as directional strategies. Strategy formulation on the other hand is dependent on situational analysis. Situational analysis in turn, provides information concerning internal as well as external environments. This information is vital in strategy formulation to select the strategies as well as develop strategic alternatives for the organization.

Directional strategies ultimately provide the beacon for the organization to draft critical business decisions. The strategies are crucial as they relate to situational analysis. Organizations should focus on determining how their organizational weaknesses or strengths shift based on influence. The next step should be contrasting the strengths as well as weaknesses with organization pillars. The situational analysis provides information regarding both external and internal, which is then used in strategy formulation.

According to Miller (2019), directional strategies comprise of mission, vision, values, and strategic goals which are instrumental in critical decisions making in an organization. These strategies are crucial in both strategy formulation as well as situational analysis because they assist the leaders during hard times. They also provide permanent goals for the organizations. Situation analysis is a part of directional strategies because the strategies help in analyzing the organization’s current state. It is important in determining the alignment of the goals and actions with the mission and values. Directional strategies are essential in aiding strategy formulation. It is because the strategies act as a ladder to navigate the company as well as indicate the organization’s broadest direction. It becomes easy for companies to lose sight of their goals and objectives when the company has no directional strategies.
