Diversity of culture and gender in the workplace today faces a myriad of challenges. According to Starvish (2013), stereotyping based on gender and race presents a challenge to having a culturally diverse workplace. This was clear from Cuddy’s experiment in which participants ranked white stay-at-home mothers as the most hardworking, while the black stay-at-home mother was seen as the least hardworking (Starvish, 2013). From my experience, professional communication can be misinterpreted or difficult to understand across languages and cultures which poses a challenge to cultural diversity in the workplace.
Utilizing diversity in positions of leadership is advantageous when considering the proper skills needed for effective negotiations. The main advantage is that utilizing the diversity enables the members of the team being led to put to effect the specific advantages they pose over other members of the group, which collectively lead to a better negotiation for the team (Starvish, 2013). For instance, masculine and feminine management styles vary with respect to their predominant negotiation style, problem solving style, and key characteristics. Given that each of the styles is superior to the other in particular settings, having diversity in positions of leadership will place the organization at a better position for better negotiations.

Workplace discrimination can be reduced through collective setting of working rules in the workplace and following up on their implementation. To begin with, it would be prudent to educate the members of the entire workplace on discrimination and its detriment on the work. The members would then be involved in setting up policies that prevent against discrimination in the workplace (Patrick & Kumar, 2012). It would then be necessary to ensure the policy is fully enforced with complaints being handled promptly and confidentially. Finally, reviewing the policy regularly would ensure that the policy’s effectiveness is maintained.
