IBM is an American-based multinational that operates in the information technology industry. Currently, IBM does not have a diversity training program. For this essay, I will identify three concerns a diversity program might address. The essay will also give an improvement summary on how IBM might best resolve those three concerns. Some of the financial benefits in implementing a diversity program are also discussed.
The first concern that a diversity program might address include differences in communication. It is more difficult to embrace diversity at IBM because of the current differences in communication and language. Although English is the most spoken language, IBM is an international organization that attracts people who speak other languages apart from English. The second concern is a generational gap. Each year, IBM hires new employees as others retire. This has denoted to a great shift in the company’s workforce (IBM, n.d.). The outcome is key differences between the various generations and distinctions in perceptions among the groups. The final concern that a diversity program may address is accepting others’ differences. A specific issue that arises at IBM is handling cultural and social differences. This partly stems from a lack of respect for and understanding others’ cultures. A good example is a case where some managers refuse to give an employee free time to observe their faith simply because they do not agree with their lifestyle.

Despite the various concerns that a diversity program might help address within IBM, it is important for the organization to acknowledge the overwhelming benefits it creates. Some of the ways the company can best resolve the above three concerns include creating and sticking to organizational policies. Another way relates to identifying and defining the issues that exist within IBM. Lastly, it is important to provide employees with diversity training related to the identified issues.
There are various financial benefits in implementing a diversity program. Companies with diversity programs tend to be more profitable; this will significantly increase IBM’s net revenue margin. Another financial benefit of this program is that it may have a positive impact on the company’s overall sales. Cultural, gender and racial diversity are related to greater profits and increased sales revenue. Finally, a diversity program can help IBM outperform other companies in the industry.
However, implementing a diversity program does not come without challenges. Research reveals that discriminatory behaviors and attitudes are the biggest obstacles to promoting diversity training and program in the workplace. Lack of awareness of the diversity practices and issues, coupled with a lack of understanding constitute a major constraint in implementing a diversity program in the workplace.
