Research Design and Method
This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Though 271 family members and 253 patients were invited to take part in the study, the final participants were 194 family members and 200 patients. The inclusion criteria for patients was that they need to be at least 21 years old, have stayed in the ICU for more than 48 hours, have an understanding of English, and needed to be alert and oriented with a mental test score of 7/10. On the other hand, the family participants were required to be at least 21 years of age, an immediate family member, and able to speak English.

The study is intended for nurses so that they can improve their engagement with family members of patients in the ICU. The study is also intended for the general public to inform them of the benefits of family visitation on patients in ICU.
