Othello, the army leader, is fit for his leadership position for several reasons. Firstly, he is a mercenary warrior and hence, on the battlefield, can lead the followers through serving as an example. Another leadership quality that Othello displays is composure. Composure entails being able to show a high level of dignity when handing a task while under extreme situations. Othello lost his brother on the battlefield but did not get swayed by the emotions. He instead, keeps to his roles and ensures things are smoothly running “Puff’d his brother.” Thirdly, he is a straightforward person and works within the principles of honesty and trust. He trusts all the leaders in his army and does not cheat them or hide any plan from them. It is recommended that a leader should remain composed and able to make clear decisions when undergoing emotional stresses. Leaders also need to stay honest with their followers as in the case off Othello.
Othello portrays significant leadership characters. However, he seems to lack certain characteristics that make him insufficient for the role of a CEO of an organization. Although trust is recommended for CEOs, the kind of trust that he displays seems to be a weakness to his leadership capability. A CEO for an organization needs to be capable of leading research on any arising issue. The primary purpose of conducting extensive research for managers is to arrive at the best decision in an instance of solving a problem or any other operation involving decision making. Othello, on the other side, fails to be good at decision making. When lago comes and tells him that Cassio had cheated on him, he immediately reacts without seeking further information on the matter. He first demotes Cassio off his position in the army and then murders his wife, Desdemona. This shows that he makes the decisions prematurely and hence, cannot effectively run an organization. Secondly, Othello is not emotionally intelligent as expected of a leader. Upon getting information that his wife has been cheating on him, he murders her instead of applying an alternative punitive action on the matter. He also reacts violently by demoting Cassio from his rank without intervening adequately to get the real news. He is, therefore, likely to impose extreme rules when given a role to serve as a CEO of an organization. Othello is also a poor nationalist. In his army, he acts in a racist manner. He makes statements that imply that he pity blacks, “Haply, for I am black.” Secondly, he is an extremist and believes that women are naturally lower than their male counterparts. The two incidences of biasness indicate that he might not treat all the people in the organization fairly because he has a pre-conceived idea and a biased mentality towards a particular group of people.

When Iago tells Othello that his wife, Desdemona, has been cheating on him with Cassio, he declares them his enemies. He kills his wife and then demotes Cassio off his rank. He believes that they have betrayed him, and they deserve to undergo severe punishment. This is despite the fact that he did not consider to confirm if the news he got were true or not. When he later finds out that Iago has betrayed him, he stubs and wounds him as well. He comes to overreact, believing that is what is necessary. However, I think that a leader does not need to act out of emotions to remain successful.
