There are a set of ideas set by the society about how gender roles should be, expecting men and women to conform to them when it comes to dressing behaving and even presenting themselves. These roles are further solidified by the media stereotyping affecting our self-images. The video Dos Equis has asserted the masculine roles whereby the man is shown getting out of frigid waters and escapes with fish which signifies toughness and brevity as two masculine traits ("Gender in commercials", 2019). He is later filmed with two beautiful women exemplifying a trait that every man yearns, to be desired by women. Also, he is shown fraternizing with a lady of high social standing portraying his social standing importance. He later scales a steep mountain to save birds showing how loving and caring he is. Collectively, these traits are enticing to males as defined by the media.

My own self-image has been affected by exposure to various media, subtly influencing the way I think by the kind of billboards, commercials and the ads they ran. Media blatantly tell us who we ought to be. However small the message they air, it has a potential impact and unfortunately, some information is damaging because it misrepresents the gender roles, like in the Dos Equis video. The media has continuously and intentionally promoted certain opinions and beliefs. Most of the time I have had to confront difficult situations at home which are beyond me like repairing leaking pipes, as my sisters unapologetically keep off. This is because the media has put it my head that a man should be brave and tough Gender in commercials.
