Leadership development seeks to expand the ability of individuals to perform better in leadership roles within their respective organizations (Daft, 2014) . Leadership roles are numerous depending on the intensity they have in the organization. Similarly, they can be classified either as formal where one has the authority to make decisions and carry out responsibilities or informal with a little bit official authority. Mostly, these roles focus on how a team engages its targets, and the goals that it ought to achieve. However, team members need to be united so as to conceive a common and achievable goal. They, therefore, need to develop ideas independently and steer clear of group thinking.
Devereaux-Dering Group was observed to suffer two-year sales decline due to various challenges facing the organization. One important problem that faced the organization is the lack of cohesion among the team members. Among other reasons, this could be attributed to poor leadership and irresponsibility. For instance, the agency hired Kurt Lansing as the leader of the team due to the problems the organization faced. Lansing was so prominent in the company that he felt superior. However, he is unaware of the problems facing his team despite being the team leader. On the hand, Brad Fitzgerald is successful and ambitious. Nevertheless, he neither shares his ideas nor listens to anyone’s opinion. This is a depiction of egocentrism which cannot work for the team. For a team to be successful, all members must be involved in all the phases of developing a team. These stages include storming, forming, performing and norming. Therefore, various factors affected the unity of Devereaux-Dering. These included lack of involvement of team members, egocentrism, superiority and irresponsible behaviour.

In case I was one of the team members, there are several suggestions that I would put forward to foster a better relationship among members and bring Fitzgerald more close to his teammates. Firstly, I would encourage the members to have shared missions and goals. Personal attraction is also an important factor that is highly desirable. Therefore, I would push all team members to work on their personal branding. Likewise, I would recommend moderate competition amongst team members to ensure success. I would advise Brad Fitzgerald, being the creative director to share his ideas with other members so as to ensure that all members work towards making Devereaux-Dering Group successful. Sharing his ideas would enhance team communication, hence giving the members morale and satisfaction which would result in increased performance. Further, I would encourage him to listen to other peoples’ opinions so as to avoid making simple mistakes. Lastly, I would urge him to foster active participation among the members.
As one of their colleagues, I would approach each of the seniors and tell them their shortcomings and suggest ways of correcting the faults. This would call the attention of some members like Fitzgerald to change his conduct towards his colleagues. Identifying the team problems and presenting them to the team leader would also be of importance as it would ensure that Kurt Lansing is updated and privy of these matters. The three members Adrienne Walsh, Tyler Green and Trish Roderick, who have issues with Fitzgerald, should confront him and address their concerns. The main reason for this is that he might not be aware of his wrongdoing and might perpetuate it, if uninformed. Information exchange among members is of great importance as it increases cohesion and overall team performance (Daft, 2014). The team members should, therefore, keep Kurt Lansing informed as he is the team leader so that he is aware of the organization’s performance. Keeping him informed is not only a way of participating but also playing an important role as a member of the organization. It will also help each member to think independently, and to share valuable information which can apply to the recovery of this organization.
In conclusion, leadership development is of great importance in the running of an organization. Each member of a team should play his/her role to enhance the organization’s overall performance. Equally, sharing of ideas amongst members is of great importance as no one will seem to be dominant or superior to others, thus fostering cohesiveness in the organization.
