The issue of drinking alcohol during the pregnancy period is surrounded by confusion. According to some health specialists, taking two glasses of wine during the early pregnancy period may not have effects on the unborn child. Drinking wine may, therefore, have fewer risk s to her health and also to her unborn baby's health. This disagrees with the belief of her family of restricting her completely from taking alcohol, believing that it will cause adverse effects on her health. However, choosing not to drink any alcohol, for instance, the red wine, at all will be the safest choice for her.
Based on some studies, drinking alcohol during early pregnancy has been proven to have some potential hazards to both a mother's and child's health. Some of these studies are from respected medical organizations that include the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The reason as to why such organizations are discouraging drinking of alcohol is that alcohol consumption during pregnancy is associated with some congenital anomalies such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) (LeWine, 2020) . Such conditions might precipitate premature labor, low birth weight, have cognitive defects later in life as well as poor general development. In addition, it is against common wisdom to drink while one is pregnant. Drinking alcohol even in the absence of pregnancy is discouraged as it leads to various health problems like cirrhosis, certain types of cancers, cardiomyopathies among others. Therefore, it is common knowledge that drinking while pregnant exposes the mother and the unborn baby to these harmful effects. Therefore, it is only prudent for the mother to stop drinking while pregnant.

In conclusion, regardless of the type of alcohol being taken during early pregnancy, drinking will expose the unborn baby to risks. This is because, no study has shown how much alcohol is enough to cause the problems earlier mentioned. Besides, it is not certain that the mother will consume the exact amount of alcohol recommended. Also, drinking even in the absence of pregnancy has a lot of health risks. Therefore, Claudia should abstain from alcoholic drinks as it will affect her unborn baby's health.
