One of the key strengths of the article is that it specifically identified the effects of drug and alcohol misuse in the workplace. For instance, the effects of alcohol consumption in the workplace was identified to impact employee performance and company profits. Other problems associated with alcohol use involved workplace injuries some of which were fata. The problem of hangover as a result of alcohol and substance use was found to impact the ability of the individual to work to their maximum productivity and performance (Penning et al., 2013). The research further identified that the problems of substance use went beyond the workplace to affect the society and to put many people in dangerous situations. The article also compiled data regarding alcohol use where it was identified that approximately ninety percent of the Austrian workforce consumes alcohol and another 28.4 % experienced problems of substance use disorder (Kolar & von Treuer, 2015).

The article then explained the problem of alcohol use by analyzing how various theories can be related to substance abuse. The disease theory observed that there are genetic and biological predisposition that cause some people to engage in excessive alcohol drinking. Social norming theory further observed that people identified with the drinking behaviors of their peers and thus chose to engage in drinking. Based on this theory, the problem of alcohol in the workplace should focus on the genera behavior of the workplace as a whole.

The article also identified whether there were interventions that have been proposed to solve the problem of substance use in the workplace. The study identified that most of the research was limited to brief interventions to solve the problem of substance use in the workplace. Additionally, there was only a small subset of researches that identified the evaluation of interventions that were used to prevent alcohol use in the workplace. The research thus accurately showed that there was a need to have an adequate analysis of substance use and its impacts.

One of the key weaknesses of the article was that its results were mostly based on sports organizations. While the results could be applied to other organizations, this could create bias and assumptions throughout the research. The other weakness of the article was that the literature review was not able to find studies that involved implementation of various interventions to solve the problem of substance abuse in the workplace.

In conclusion, the problem of substance abuse in the workplace is a big problem in today’s society and the workplace. The article that was identified conducted a literature review on alcohol abuse in the workplace and tried to identify some of the interventions that were put in place. One of the key strength of the article was that it identified the effects that substance abuse has on today’s workforce.
