Communication refers to the act of receiving or sending information from one group or entity to another through a common system of behavior, signs or symbols. Humans convey information in a number of ways such as through the internet, books and newspapers, radio, television, mobile phones as well as through face-to-face communication. Effective communication is of utmost importance since it helps in spreading information and knowledge among people and also helps people build relationships with others (Grunig, 2013).
Any communication situation is supposed to be well planned and analyzed by way of contemplating the issues that surround the specific intent and the target group. To improve on chances of attaining good results in a communication situation, proper preparations have to be made. These preparations should target the audience, topic, intention, language, circumstances, amongst other factors (Khaighi & Uysal, 2014). Understanding the strategies required for effective communication including a focus on the target audience, listening and seeking clarifications increase the chances of attaining effective communication.

Recently I received an invitation to a public lecture organized by World Health Organization on Strategies for Preventing the spread of Malaria. There were many people in attendance eager to listen to what the speaker had to say. In my view of this communication situation, the message was well received by the audience. A number of reasons can be attributed to the success of the public lecture such as Proper planning whereby the speaker had prepared a necessary plan on what exactly he was supposed to deliver, there was no language barrier between the speaker and the audience since he spoke in English which we were all conversant with, there was proper presentation of the lecture by the speaker, there was a high level of attention from the audience. This was demonstrated when they readily asked the speaker some questions with the aim of clarification. The speaker listened to the audience whenever there was any matter arising from the lecture.
In this communication situation, therefore, the common barriers known to result in a communication breakdown were well addressed by both the speaker and the audience. This communication situation can be well related to the communication theory. The idea of communication theory was first proposed by S.F Scudder in 1980, and it generally states that all living things that occupy the planet are engaged in communication, though this takes place in different forms. Communication Theory can be examined through many viewpoints (Khalighi & Uysal, 2014). Such viewpoints that were evident in this public lecture included Psychological viewpoint since the thoughts and feelings of the speaker were well shared with the audience, social viewpoint because there was interaction between the speaker and the audience and finally the Mechanistic viewpoint whereby there was transmission of information to the second party (audience) from the first party (speaker).
