Main Subject Area
Divorce has become increasingly commonplace in our society. The challenges that family can face during divorce include legal, financial, and emotional struggles among members of the family. For instance, the financial changes and emotional consequences can be detrimental to both children and adults. Unequal financial burden can put a strain on post-marital relationship, which can possibly affect the collaboration of two parents in raising their children. One parent can feel overwhelmed financially and withdraw from the interaction with the other parent and the children as well. According to Mahrer et al. (2016), the quality of relationships of both parents after divorce determines the emotional, physical, and academic well-being of their children.
Subareas
The two subareas include the effect of divorce on children and possible improvements that can be put in place to help these children. It is important to completely understand the impact that divorce has on children and the steps that be put in place to reduce the potential adverse effects of divorce on children. Divorce causes children to experience behavioral and emotional issues. The behavioral and emotional problems are common among children from divorce families. They have a tendency of acting out in anxiety, self-harm, or anger, as a way of conveying their experiences and feelings about the divorce. In most instances, during the process of divorce, children are often left to deal with challenges by themselves and this could be devastating and overwhelming to them. For instance, the parents of such children spend less time coaching them in schoolwork, which results in poor academic performance.
The improvements that can be made to ensure children from divorce family are taken care of well include parents taking a collaborative approach to offer greater financial security for all family members as well as for the non-custodial parent. In addition, parents should ensure their children receive adequate parental care from them by providing them with the most appropriate support they require to meet their individual needs. For instance, the parents can provide their children with a counsellor to talk and guide them through emotional processing. This will provide them with effective strategies on how to cope with their parents’ divorce and the changes that comes with it. Alternatively, the parents can put their children in gatekeeping system, which provides families with preventive services that enhance the ability of families to take care of their children adequately, by addressing the challenges experienced by an individual child ( Saini, Drozd & Olesen, 2017).
The subarea that is of most interest to me include the effect of divorce on children. The four questions I could possibly ask in this area of interest include the following:
How does divorce affect the development of a child?
How does divorce affect a child’s behavior?
What kind of things are damaging to children because of divorce?
How can a child adjust to divorce?
