The English colonies under the crown should break from it as this poem depicts the joys of being free. The poem "To The Right Honorable William-Earl of Dartmouth," portrays the theme of freedom and how happy one feels to be free as seen in lines 2-“fair Freedom rose New England to adorn,”8 –“….and Freedom charms unfold” and 21 my “love of freedom sprung…where the poet capitalizes the word freedom and tranny to show how important it is hence the English colonies won’t have the pride of actually know.” The element of freedom, as opposed to the then existent slavery, was something that the poet depicts, thus the advocacy for the breaking off of English colonies from under the crown.

As one continues to read the poem, it is very evident through the use of vivid imagery that freedom is a good, majestic and powerful thing- line 11 the poet describes freedom as a goddess who is a powerful creature. Also in lines 18-19, the poet portrays how being under someone’s rule is amongst the darkest and hardest times a person would undergo. The chains portray the enslavement hence the English colonies should break to not undergo the dark times and break away from the chains

The lines 27 and 29 show how a girl is taken away from her parents at a very young age and how the parents felt and this is how colonies that are under the crown would feel. The colonies would be worthless, and all they believe to own would be the crown's property. As the poem concludes, the poet asks the earl for the favor of ensuring that no one undergoes the same and also thanks them for their freedom because they now know the benefits and sweetness of freedom hence the English colonies should value their freedom and break away from the crown to grow.
