Refer back to  Table 5-2 , which presents characteristics of infants who were exclusively breastfed. Describe the results shown in the table. Suppose you wanted to conduct a survey of breastfeeding in your own community:

How would you choose the participants?

What questionnaire items would you include in the survey?

What type of study design is a survey?

The results indicated in this table clearly shows that approximately 43% of the babies in the US are well breastfed only for the first three months. This percentage is shown to drop with an estimation of about 22% when the babies are at six months of their age. The table also clearly shows that breastfeeding is poor among the non-Hispanic black parents compared to other racial or ethnic groups. Also, the percentages that were seen to be lower came from young parents who are not married, unstable incomes and with a low level of education.

Performing a survey on breastfeeding mothers in the community will need a purposive sampling method. For breastfeeding mothers, features selected for a sample requires a sound judgment to achieve a representative sample of the population. Only participants with specific features of interest to the study will qualify to participate in the survey. The particular elements will be useful in assisting the researcher to answer the research question. The first step will be to make a list containing the required characteristics of participants, locate the participants, ask for a referral and finally conduct the survey.

Questionnaire items for the survey will include information about the participant’s background information, experiences during pregnancy, birth and maternity period, and their perceptions about breastfeeding in public places, and workplaces. Also, other crucial elements will include promotional advertisements on breastfeeding, the number of times they breastfed in a day and for how long have they been breastfeeding. This study will use two types of survey, i.e., questionnaire and interviews. Questionnaires will be used for closed-ended questions, and they will be administered physically by the researcher. Personal interviews will be used to collect extra information that will not have been captured in the questionnaire.
