Leadership is an element whereby an individual is placed in charge of other subjects. This can occur in many varied forms. For instance, during a hiking expedition, the person leading the entire group through the thickets of the jungle is the leader. Not everyone can be a leader since leadership has its own challenges that require someone who is capable of handling difficult situations and offering valuable guidance to others. Leadership, further necessitates that one focusses on other people`s strengths in order to encourage them to do something they never imagined they could. Moreover, it requires one to be proactive, and not willing to accommodate everything as it appears. People, nevertheless, require governance in order for them to evade disputes, and leadership readily offers this.

Leadership is an essential component even in the health sector. I particularly remember one experience when I had gone to the hospital for some minor treatment several years ago. As I was waiting for my turn to go into the examination room, around three individuals dashed in carrying a fatally injured man who was bleeding profusely. This was indeed an emergency case and no one could dispute that, and as the patient was placed on the hospital stretcher, two of his colleagues dashed to the counter franticly asking for assistance. The nurse in charge asked them if they had insurance, which they reported in the contrary. They were then told they would have to pay a huge down-payment before their friend could be treated. This was also not an option for them and they were informed that only the head of the medical facility could authorize for such treatment and as they sought to reach out to the leader of that establishment their friend succumbed to his wounds. This event reminds me of the negligence in terms of healthcare leadership in some of the facilities.

An authentic leader bears a visionary nature. This implies that they have the ability to foresee future unexpected circumstances. Also, such a leader possesses high levels of integrity. It is, therefore, impossible to compromise the person by offering them incentives in exchange for personal favors (Hargett et al., 2017). The leader opts to treat each individual equally. An authentic leader has exceptional listening skills. This is someone who offers other people an opportunity to speak so that he can decipher what they are trying to say. Another trait is transparency, whereby the person does everything in an open manner without incorporating any underhandedness. The performance of an authentic leader is also consistent. As a result, they tend to improve each time in a bid to deliver excellent results.

In order to develop the skills or habits of an authentic leader, one ought to look up to the leaders they admire. They can observe the traits of such people and also how they operate while in a team (Swanwick & McKimm, 2017). They should also ensure that they place other people first since an authentic leader ought to be of service to other individuals. Part of the exercise would also require them to strike a balance between their professional and personal lives. Personal relationships at work may make it unideal for people to work together. Moreover, one has to determine the level of seriousness which they are to portray to others depending on the situation they find themselves in.

Based on this exercise it is possible for someone to possess similar attributes to the person they admire once they learn how to harness such traits. Being a team player enables the healthcare leader to coordinate activities with their subordinates. Also, by ensuring that such leaders do not mix their personal relationships with work, it becomes possible for them to deliver effectively. Besides, a person`s character determine how others get to treat them at work. Having the proper attitude is, therefore, beneficial in enabling one to receive the required level of respect from others.
