In the presented case, it is important to have a good model that will help in guiding our decision making process putting into consideration all of ASCA’s ethical standards. As such, we need to put into consideration al the circumstances that will arise from the action of the school counseling intern and how it will affect all the parties presented in the ethical dilemma. Since it is paramount to save the life of the school counselor by donating a kidney, which the school counseling intern has voluntarily accepted to give, then we need to refer to ASCA standards. From this act, we see the school counselor observe the ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors that looks at them adhering to ethical standards of practice in their line of duty (Huey, 2011). Moreover, we should also put into consideration all state laws to facilitate that the decision of the intern counselor are in accordance with stated standards. Furthermore, there is a need to also determine all options available in handling the ethical dilemma and reflect also on the consequence of decisions on all parties. According to ASCA standards, dual relationships are not allowed and this gives rise to the urgency of looking at this aspect from the counselor’s and intern’s side. One of the consequences stated is that failure to performing the act will lead to the death of the school counselor. This consequence is bound to affect their job performance and therefore, it is necessary to get the views and advice of other professionals.
It is important to consult with other parties as it ensures that the decision made is in accordance with ethical standards. Moreover, it implies that school counselors are professional and ethical in their line of duty by giving focus to positive collaborations with all stakeholders (Froeschle & Crews, 2010). In addition, it is also important for a school counselor to give reference to the presented ethical decision making model before proceeding so as to provide an outcome that favors all parties in the equation. Therefore, As such, the school counselor worked at upgrading those obligations to benefit the society. He took a voluntary step in donating his or her kidney to the student. This act sees the school counselor subordinate self to the interest of others without exploiting the student.
