Ethics and morality are vital in the criminal justice system. Ethics and morals refer to the accepted standards of behavior in the society and compliance is essential in maintaining the social fabric. Law enforcement officers often encounter ethical dilemmas that affect the lives of thousands of people in their communities. I will give my personal opinion about why ethics and morals are important to have and why I consider myself an ethical person. Moreover, I will summarize the article “Marriage fidelity speaks volumes about your honor” by Dees, providing my analysis and application to my professional life.
The importance of ethics and morals cannot be underestimated. Ethics and morals aid in making the right choices in personal and occupational life. For example, deciding to remain faithful to a marriage partner or prosecuting criminals for their illegal activities. Moreover, ethics enable individuals to critically examine assumptions surrounding different facts and circumstances to come to the right conclusion. An ethical and moral person is highly sensitive to what is right and wrong and this results in the development of ethical conduct. For example, although it is normal for police officers to receive a freebie the officers should recognize that such an act may eventually lead them to engage in corrupt behavior.

I consider myself an ethical person due to some reasons. Although I have my interests and desires, I take into consideration the needs of other people in the society. Therefore, my behavior is respectful to everybody regardless of their age, gender, and class among other individual traits. Moreover, I am true to my word and keep my promises under different circumstances in life in spite of the difficulties. I am accountable for my actions, and I don’t blame others for my mistakes. Since I acknowledge that humans are prone to error, I have learned how to forgive people for their mistakes and to rebuild broken friendships. My ethical behavior has enabled me to rise in my career and establish a good family.
Something of concern in Article “Marriage fidelity speaks volumes about your honor” is fidelity in marriage. As Dees (2013) put it, some workers dare to brag about having extramarital affairs with colleagues at workplace. It is a worrisome situation considering that someone is married, and during that time, he or she took an oath to be faithful. In the beginning, Levi Chavez-a police officer at Albuquerque Police Department-admitted having had an extramarital affair even though he denied killing claims. Ethics at the workplace is crucial to keeping trust and developing a viable work environment.
The “nature at play” kind of thing in my view cannot come to play as claimed by the chief of the police department. The article covers great ethical concerns as far as marital issues are concerned. Specifically, the article delves much on keeping a promise to partner, something I agree with, especially when taking an oath to live as husband and wife. Also, I agree with the fact that marriage is a beyond being a mere ceremony. It is one of the most significant events in everyone’s life, and we should honor it.
However, at some point, I did not agree with the author, especially after the death of a spouse. Once someone is dead, she is no more, and life should move on. I do not think it falls in the bracket of ethics for a person to believe that keeping trust with a dead person is viable. Even though having affairs with workmates is unethical, and uncalled for, one can remarry and stay faithful. According to Dees (2103), “nature at play” as the chief of police staff believes does not hold any equation. Furthermore, bragging to other colleagues to be in extramarital affair taints one’s image.
In a nutshell, ethics at the workplace is crucial and fosters a better work environment. Having extramarital affairs at the job deters the ability to perform and “nature at play” situation has no place, and it is unjustifiable. Marriage is an essential thing in life, and one should be trustworthy to his or her partner at all times. In this case, ethics play a crucial role in aiding to make the right decision.
