Among significant issues identified by the department of justice (DOJ) necessitating keen attention, the state of the police emerges as one critical aspect that currently requires leaders with the ability to hold steady. Recent events have shone a light on the corruption in the police departments across the country. The corruption in the police departments has been epitomized by police brutality and the lack of penalties for most perpetrators (Holmes, 2018). As a result, the masses have taken to the streets to voice their concerns and frustrations. Some are even calling for the abolishment of the police or defunding of their departments. However, amid the chaos, the leadership in the police departments and the relevant authorities have managed to hold steady and deal with the protestors` anger.

Throughout the protests, the leadership has been able to apply the principles of holding steady. For example, despite the numerous attacks aimed at the police and its leadership, such as suggestions for defunding, disbanding, and even physical attacks at their premises, the leadership has gracefully taken the heat. Instead of retaliating, the leadership has communicated its knowledge of the need for change by maintaining a calm and remaining true to the greater purpose of change. The focus on the greater purpose of tangible police reforms is important because the nature of mass protest is that the individuals taking part are prone to losing focus and venting their anger without the main aim in mind (Muntu, 2018). While it is true that there have been visible instances where the protestors have seemed to get the police to bow down to their demands, on a policy level, none of the suggestions put across by the angry mob have been implemented.

The leadership has also engaged in ripening the issue by listening to other concerns that people want to be addressed. In the process, the leadership has also sought to understand how deeply the issue has affected the people, a move that helps to ripen the issue of corruption in police departments. Collectively, the above decisions constitute an example of leaders holding steady, which is to the benefit of not only the police department but also the same masses calling for the defunding of the police. Finally, the leadership has also stayed on course and maintained its credibility by simultaneously listening, not backing down.
