Hematology Laboratory
After assessing the circumstances in Memphis it would be appropriate to Renovate Methodist Diagnostic Center by establishing a Hematology laboratory within its set up. The Medical lab is intended to carry out routine hematology tests on coagulation and other bodily fluids for analysis and diagnosis of various diseases and infections. The laboratory is envisaged to deploy the use of modern technology with a view to generating accurate results.
Among other diagnostic services anticipated from the laboratory include automated analysis, rapid pregnancy screening and analysis of other bodily fluids for crystal evaluation, cell counts and analysis of white blood cells differentials. Besides other diagnoses carried out in Methodist Diagnostic Center, the Hematology lab would be highly useful in carrying out more specified tests and analysis of various diagnoses specifically in the field of hematology.

Facilities and Healthcare Services Offered in Memphis
At the face of it, Memphis enjoys a record high number of medical facilities from which Healthcare services are discharged. Among other Healthcare institutions in the city include local medical services offered in facilities such as Methodist Healthcare Hospital, Methodist South Hospital Baptist Memorial Hospital among others. Further, rehabilitation services are also offered at facilities such as The HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Memphis, Physical Therapeutic services at Regional One Health Rehabilitation Hospital and Pediatric Health services offered at Spence and Becky Wilson Children’s Hospital. Mental health care services also form part of health care services offered in the city from institutions such as Delta Medical Center. Within the city are also located various Urgent Care facilities such as Methodist Minor Medical Center Midtown and Nursing Homes such as Signature HealthCare of Memphis among other. Facilities such as medical clinics, assisted living facilities, community healthcare centers and diagnostic centers are located within the city.
Renovation of Methodist Diagnostic Center
The first aspect of concern towards setting up the facility includes acquisition of accreditation from the Joint Commission after compliance with the established standards that a medical laboratory set up in the United States should comply with. Renovation of Methodist Diagnostic Center involves establishing a Hematology laboratory within the facility which is intended to operate as a primary laboratory. The lab shall be operated by qualified personnel including qualified Hematologists and registered Medical Laboratory Scientists to be incorporated depending on the capacity of the facility.
Based on both national and international standards for setting up a Medical Laboratory, the facility is envisaged to operate as an independent entity within the diagnostic center. As such, it would be located at least 300 meters away from any facilities within Methodist diagnostic center or other establishments that may be at risk of contamination by wastes churned from the lab that may pose a health hazard. Besides compliance with the building space, the laboratory is also expected to have adequate working space within the building itself. The facility would be specious to the extent that there would be a clear distinction of contaminated areas from clean areas. The building plan would also incorporate specious rooms measuring up to the standards set by the Joint Commission resources in the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Laboratory and Point of Care Testing. The set-up brought out in the rooms is also expected to be adequately viable for installation of robotic equipment that can be integrated with other devices to facilitate efficiency in discharging modern diagnostic services at the facility.
Essence of the renovation
Essentially, the lab is meant to bridge the gap exhibited in Methodist Diagnostic Center in Methodist Minor Medical Center – Midtown, with a view to complimenting diagnostic services within the facility per se. Further, the renovation is deemed suitable to the extent that it allows for establishment of a modern diagnostic facility with adequate room and space to accommodate modern equipment such as laboratory robotic systems that embrace technology in terms of laboratory automation that guarantees fast and accurate diagnosis of infections and diseases.
In addition, the facility would discharge, with utmost efficiency and accuracy, Healthcare services in tandem with Hematology by virtue of it autonomous operation and specialization in hematology. Such healthcare services among others would include diagnosis and research on conditions such as cancer, leukemia, platelet and frozen plasma transfusion and blood transfusion while operating as a blood bank. Further, since the lab is intended to operate as an independent entity, its utility is therefore expected to be overarching to an extent that it attains the capacity to discharge diagnostic services to a significant population in the city.
