“ And when, on the morrow, she presented Elizabeth to me as her promised gift, I, with childish seriousness, interpreted her words literally and looked upon Elizabeth as mine-mine to protect, love and cherish. All praises bestowed on her I received as made to a possession of my own.” (p.30)

From the passage above, it is evident that Victor is kind, loving and possessive. The arrival of his adopted sister, Elizabeth, makes him ecstatic in the knowledge that he has a companion to spend the rest of his life with. Considering that he did not have a sibling, it is understandable that his childhood prior to Elizabeth’s adoption was characterized with loneliness and he was eager to have a playmate. His kindness is notable in that he had noticed the abject poverty that Elizabeth was coming from. He is also a loving character going by the seriousness with which he took Elizabeth’s arrival. He intimates that Elizabeth’s arrival prompted him to assume responsibility for her wellbeing. This further highlights maturity of thought whereby he strives to provide the little girl with protection on top of love. Victor is also a possessive character going by the fact that he believed that he owned Elizabeth from the moment she arrived until the end of days. He takes credit for everything nice that is said in praise for the girl. More so, he is convinced that Elizabeth is his and that he should be involved in everything that concerns her. As a reader, I am attracted by Victor and his reaction the Elizabeth’s adoption. This is because as an only child he is not too selfish that he would not want another child to compete for attention from his parents as it is often the case with first children. More so, he is aware that Elizabeth comes from a needy background and wishes to keep her close in hope that it would make her life much better. His possessive nature, on the other hand, foreshadows that the two are likely to be united in the future as lovers. As a loving and protective character with a noble background, he comes out as a hero especially to the little girl.
