Intersex individuals are born with characteristics, such as chromosomes and genitals that do not coincide with the typical idea of male or female bodies. The fact that Western societies do not acknowledge intersex individuals is problematic because these individuals are considered different. This therefore, leads to stigmatization and subjecting them to human rights violation. The discriminatory treatment includes infanticide, mutilation, abandonment and neglect not to mention concerns regarding their right to life. Moreover, intersex individuals are discriminated in education, healthcare, employment and sports. In addition, harmful medical practices can affect their mental and physical health, as well as increased poverty levels.

The Mohave girls who refused to learn women’s tasks and therefore be socialised as boys were two spirited. Two Spirit is a term used by the Mohave community referring to homosexuality. I think these girls were very brave to expose themselves like that. They must have faced discrimination and many challenges despite the community acceptance. This is because Mohave community was known to kill or even burn homosexuals.
