The society today has become complex, and sexual orientation issues have maintained an upsurge with increased interaction amongst individuals at various social institutions such as schools. My position as a school principal has exposed me to various gender-based issues in the school environment because both the staff and students come from different cultural backgrounds. Overall, gender issues will always arise, and sometimes they result in serious conflict that if not resolved amicably hinders positive relations amongst people.
The first sexual orientation issue I encountered in my first year of service as a principle involved a particular male student who refused to help a female teacher by carrying her teaching aids to the staff room. The student refused on the grounds that in their culture, women do not assign men roles irrespective of their social positions or status in the society. The student held that women take instructions from men and not the other way round. The society in which the student grew in regarded women as subordinate to men, which explains why he had such a perception. The student regarded his teacher as a woman who could not give him instruction and not as a teacher.

The other incident occurred when students of a particular grade refused to acknowledge their new female class monitor because they believed that women cannot front men in matters of leadership. The students openly defied their new female class monitor’s instructions and demanded her immediate replacement. Men dominate leadership positions in almost every organization and political leadership which has become a culture in various societies. The students come from the same communities that do not believe women can also provide good leadership, which explains their opposition to the newly appointed female class monitor. In light of the above, individuals in leadership ought to think of long-term solutions to gender issues and even enlighten people under them about the same problem .
