There are never universal gender roles given that gender roles are culturally and historically influenced. Over time gender roles in the US have undergone drastic change with the most notable change being the shift in family income earning. America has been seen men being the only providers in the family set up. However this is gradually changing where women are increasingly being involved in bread winning for the families. Additionally, women have been largely involved only in family matters but the rise of feminism has seen an influx of women in workforce. The system of labor division has also changed with women becoming involved in what has been termed as men dominated fields including the security forces. The rise of feminism can be viewed as the point at which gender roles overlapped to bring relative equality in roles.

In my opinion, there should be no labor areas reserved for men or women only. Continuous studies have indicated that men and women are not so different after all. However stereotypes have existed to imply that indeed men and women are different. Behavioral differences that may imply a difference between men and women have been researched and shown that they can be learned making it easy for either gender to excel in what has been held as gender specific labor areas. Having women in the army and leading battle fronts may influence decisions to lock them out of the security service but it would lead to a societal imbalance if only men died in the battlefronts.

The third gender community encompasses individuals who are either not gendered or those who have uncommon variations. A difference exists between sex and gender. Sex is viewed as biological characteristics inherent in an individual that cannot be changed and makes an individual either male or female. On the other hand gender is a social and cultural view of individuals that such individuals display. Gender on a broad basis refers to femininity or masculinity of an individual that is either acquired unconsciously or forced upon an individual.
