Human beings like to explore, learn and have control over the environment they live. People have been capturing and recording snapshots of their perception of the world they live in using maps making Geographic Information System (GIS) a useful tool in carrying out mapping activities. A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a tool designed to capture, store, manipulate and present all types of geographic data enabling people to understand the environment they live in (Gregory, Cooper, Hardie, & Rayson, 2015). The Geographic Information System technology captures two sets of data that is spatial data and attributes data that add more information on the spatial data. Geographic Information System can be able to map (spatially) for instance the location of a school and the attribute data will capture the name of the school or level. The combination of these two data types plays a significant role in enabling GIS a useful tool for solving spatial problems via spatial analysis.

Geographic Information System plays a critical role in changing how people perceive the environment they live in, for instance, the interaction of human activities and the state of the situation. People can download satellite images and analyze them using GIS, and the results are useful in carrying out spatial planning because different regions have different resources. GIS, therefore, enable planners to plan effectively, ensuring that each part has access to the relevant resources that makes human life comfortable.

Fighting the issue of climate change is not possible without the use of Geographic Information System because this tool enables the people to track the trend of human activities and the impact on the state of the environment (Wallace, 2018). One can download satellite images of different years, for instance, a range of ten years and analyze the impact of human activities on natural resources like forest using GIS. The analysis can capture the reduced forest cover that reflects the increase in the number of carbon emissions, leading to a rise in global temperature and reduced rainfall. Geographic Information System is of the essential tools that play a significant role in helping people understand the spatial characteristics of the environment as well as solving spatial problems, including that of climate change.
