The insulin BD brochure has been written using a simple language that is easy to understand. Most words used are shorter and minimal use of abbreviations. This is important as it enhances the understanding ability of the low literacy patients. Low literacy patients may not understand complicated terms especially the medical ones. The brochure has also used more direct terms rather than using jargon and specialist’s terminologies. This further enhances the understanding ability of the low literacy patients who may not be well used to such vocabularies. The brochure used short and clear paragraphs which make it easy for the low literacy patients to understand. Too long paragraphs may be confusing to the low literacy patients thus hindering their understanding of the material.

The insulin BD brochure has used a combination of both words and visual description which is essential in enhancing the understanding of the low literacy patients. For the low literacy patients, images can communicate better than using words alone. By seeing what is in the image, the patient can relate and understand what he/she is required to do. The brochure has also used bullet points with a large font to make the material more clear and easy to read. The audience has been addressed directly in the brochure by using second person words. For example, “if you are taking cloudy insulin, roll the bottle between your hands…” This makes the low literacy patients feel that they are directly being addressed. Some words have been made bold in the brochure to show emphasis so that the reader can get the significant points. This is significant to ensure the patients follow all the instructions. In the steps to follow while injecting with insulin, an explanation and an image are showing what is being explained so that in case the reader cannot understand the explanations, he/she can understand the picture.
