1. What is it about Google's human resource practices and procedures that make it an attractive company to work for? Please explain. 

• Hiring. Google’s hiring procedure helps to hire recruits with the desired behavioral and situational characteristics. The interview process involves the assessment of the recruits cognitive, conscientiousness and leadership. The recruits are offered a guide on the interview process for them to assess their performance and consider whether or not to proceed with the interview, thus screening the recruits better.

• Training. Google believes in transforming their employees to match the company’s requirements. For this, the company undertakes employee training using approaches best suited to meet the needs of Google. 

• Performance management. The company carries out employee management throughout of the employee’s career. Performance management starts with setting objectives and key results, followed by evaluations of the employee performance through their line managers. Evaluation of the employees also includes acquiring feedback from the employees on how the company can help them deliver results better. 

• The last human resource practice regards pay decisions. Google makes pay decisions after performance reviews are done. 

2. To what extent are Google's hiring procedures consistent with the recommendations proposed in this chapter? Discuss your logic. 

In this chapter, we learnt of helping an employee achieve his best potential by assisting them to realize their capabilities while at work. Google undertakes employee performance management to review the employees’ performance and also seeks feedback from these employees on ways in which the company can help them perform better at work. 

3. How would you describe Google's approach toward training its employees

The approach used by Google to train its employees helps it to achieve the best out of them. It models the employee to match the company’s culture and to align them with the needs of the company. Focus is laid on the employees’ weaknesses, perfect this weakness to the benefit of the company. 

4. To what extent does Google follow the performance management process depicted in Figure 9.3? 

Google follows the performance management process depicted in the figure fully. It begins with setting the key objectives and deliverables that are required from the employees, carries out monitoring and evaluation of the employees’ performance as compared to the objectives set, seeks feedback on the causes of the employees’ performance and identifies the training needs that the employees have and finally makes pay decisions based on the results obtained at the end of the performance management process cycle. 

5. Do you see any downside to the performance management approach used at Google? Explain your rationale

In my view, Google’s performance management approach does not have a downside that could affect the company’s performance. The performance process helps to monitor and ensure that the employees are aligned with the company’s goals thus helping deliver results as per the set objectives. 

6. What is your key takeaway from this case? 

I performance management, feedback is a crucial aspect of the process. It helps to identify the specific needs that the employees have regarding training to assist them to perform better in the workplace.
