Nigeria has long struggled with numerous governance issues and poverty; therefore, the country is in need of significant economic transformation. What has the government done to address the problems facing the nation and enhance development? The government has invested heavily towards efforts aimed at pushing the country to reach the next level of growth. Natural resources and industrial equipment have been used extensively to achieve these levels of development. Main problems that the state continues to experience include inadequate housing, poor sanitation, degradation of the agricultural land and insufficient supply of clean water. Evidently, the majority of the problems have been linked to the infrastructural development and oil drilling. To address some of the major issues that have continuously impacted Nigeria’s economy and environment, the government has adopted policies and established agencies to help in dealing with various environmental concerns. Environmental Impact Assessment Act of 1992, for instance, has played a critical role in protecting the environment and potential control pollution.

Rwanda’s economy was left in massive tatters after the genocide that took place more than two decades ago. Today, the country has been able to establish and develop its economy, and people live healthier and wealthier lives. Despite the fall in the levels of poverty, more than 60 percent of the population lives on less than $1.25 a day. Over the years, the country has been a rural agrarian state; however, it has undergone rapid urbanization. Some of the major environmental concerns facing the country include poaching, overgrazing, poor agricultural practices and clear-cutting of forests. The question raised is what the government is doing to address these problems. The government has partnered with intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to develop initiatives to address the environmental issues. One of the most influential and independent initiative is the Rwanda Initiative for Sustainable Development (RISD), that work closely with NGOs and IGOs to educate the rural population and encourage access to land, use of land, and improve sustainability.

Sustainable development is the development aimed at meeting the needs of the current population without significantly compromising the capability of the future generation to meet their own. Why is sustainability so important? The question is fundamentally focused on ways sustainability is considered the base for modern’s frame for global collaboration. The current generation is extensively using much natural resources and energy. The use of the natural resource at such a higher rate the generation might not be able to meet their needs hence they would not be able to survive. As a result of this, a potential conflict would be created where people would be fighting over the limited resources available. Haiti is evidently one of the nations that have been doing poorly regarding sustainable development particularly as a result of massive deforestation such that there are few trees to accumulate water. The government of Haiti has been criticized for doing nothing to address this problem.
