Week 1 Discussion Board

Health informatics allows for the adoption of technology with the sole focus being towards organizing and analyzing health records to improve health outcomes (Mantas et al., 2010). Personally, one of the critical areas of strength that I consider concerning informatics is the programming knowledge that I hold. The programming knowledge has been of great value towards improving my literacy levels concerning the use of information management systems; thus, guaranteeing positive outcomes. Another critical area of strength that I must note is on communication. Communication is considered as a crucial skill that one ought to have, as it helps towards defining success in the use of health informatics. In my case, communication has been a skill that I have cultivated for a long time with the sole intention being towards ensuring that I am well positioned to convey information adequately.

How social and professional networking can improve the use of healthcare informatics processes, as they help towards creating a diverse range of avenues through which to collect relevant data that can be used in the processes. Yasnoff, O Carroll, Koo, Linkins, & Kilbourne (2010) reflect on the value placed on networking arguing that it helps in ensuring that one is well positioned towards representing health data in a manner that is not only reflective but seeks to allow for efficiency in the use of health data. Health informatics processes rely on big data with the focus being on using the data as a way of improving health care outcomes. Consequently, this means that both social and professional networking can be considered as some of the critical areas of focus in meeting the required data amounts to drive the processes.

Week 6 Discussion Board

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) believes in the need for having to coordinate and accelerate the efforts taken concerning the issue of EHR usability, which has allowed them to provide recommendations for the same (Middleton et al., 2013). The relevance of these recommendations reflects more on how health institutions would be able to use EHR systems with the focus being towards improving patient safety. Patient safety remains one of the critical issues affecting health institutions today, considering that they encounter significant challenges in their bid to protecting their patients at all times. That reflects on the value and relevance of the recommendations by AMIA, which seek to highlight some of the critical areas of focus in ensuring that the systems build on a positive outcome. Additionally, the proposals can also be considered as being relevant taking into account that they seek to highlight how the use of EHR may work lead to safer and higher quality care while ensuring that the health institutions involved have a better return on their investments (Middleton et al., 2013).

The first recommendation for improving communication using information technology revolves around training of staff on the use of information technology tools that would be of value towards improving communication processes. Lack of knowledge on how to use different information technology tools is a likely factor that would lead to a reduced acceptance rate of the apparatus; thus, leading to adverse outcomes (Vaishnavi & Kuechler, 2015). The second recommendation is that it would be essential to ensure that every employee is involved in the process of selecting the IT systems to use for purposes of communication. That will help give them a sense of confidence concerning what they ought to expect as an outcome associated with improved communication processes that can be attributed to IT.
