Maslow's hierarchy of needs focuses on individuals' self-actualization. Maslow developed a pyramid to show how individuals are motivated. He concluded that when a set of standards are satisfied, the individual needs cease to act as a motivator. Therefore, needs are classified as psychological, safety, social, as well as self-actualization. Thus, the lowest needs are the ones that are unsatisfied and has the greatest potential for motivation.
Alderfer’s EGR theory classifies needs as existence needs, material needs, relatedness needs, which are mainly satisfied through communication, as well as growth needs that are mainly satisfied through involvement (Wu & Lu, 2013). The motivational factor of the theory is a need that is least satisfied as individuals move forward their needs from intrinsic to extrinsic motivation.
