The definition of health and health problems by individuals is significant, especially to the nurses in an attempt to enhance health promotion, education, and disease prevention. The concept of health has been changing over time, and the meaning of health keeps on varying from time to time. The concept of health to many people have been viewed with regard to biomedical, ecological, and holistic concepts. The individuals viewing health on the biomedical concept define health as an absence of disease and that whenever a person is free from a disease, he is considered healthy. On the other hand, ecological concept sees health as a relative absence of pain and discomfort. The meaning people give to the concepts of health and health problem is significant because it determines how, when, and whether people go to seek medical care. Health and health problems, therefore, have many interpretations and thus the need for the nurses to understand how people understand their health. According to the World Health Organization, health is “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (Chirico, 2016). The implication of different meanings that people have when defining health is of great concern to the nurses in their attempt to enhance health promotion and education in the community. The theoretical model that is of great concern to me is the ecological model because it entails the interaction between and the interdependence and all other factors across all levels of health problem. It is important because it looks at the multiple levels of influence on health behaviors, which is significant in enhancing a healthy society. It takes into account the perspectives such as public policy, interpersonal, individual, and public policy factors.

Previous studies have shown that vaccination helps prevent diseases. Many medical organizations have all concluded that the administration of vaccines can help prevent the diseases that once had devastating effects on individuals. Even though some groups have openly come out to protest on the constitutionality of vaccination, others feel that failure to vaccinate people will subject the unvaccinated into illness and death. An important aspect of the potential benefits of vaccination is smallpox. The smallpox was once a deadly disease and “ protection from Smallpox, influenza, and polio and many other diseases and viruses are already well-known vaccination benefits” ( Shapiro , 2016). It is an important way to eradicate and control the spread of these serious diseases completely. Polio and smallpox have been almost completely eradicated due to vaccination. The negative side effects of vaccination have, however been evident in the measles and rubella vaccination in children, with problems seen to develop many years later. A study performed in 12 children who were vaccinated for measles showed that at first, there were satisfactory achievements. Further test, however, showed that the children developed intestinal abnormalities and autistic behavioral disorders. With people still weighing the potential benefits and harms of vaccination, the end to this controversy is to enhance the safety of the vaccination drugs. While vaccination is useful in preventing certain diseases, it is important to do thorough research and understand any harmful side effects of the vaccines. Increasing the safety of the vaccines can be a great step to removing the controversy and fear of any possible harm that could arise.
