There have been instances that I thought the trailer was much better than the actual movie. For example, the Superman Returns was a major let down. The first time I saw the movie trailer, I was so excited and I could not wait to watch the movie. However, afterwards, I came to find out that it was not what I was actually expecting because the movie delivered only the nostalgia for the other older movies in the series of Superman movies.
On the other hand, I liked the movie Lady Bird very much. I feel like the movie delivered on the promises of its trailer. The reason I like the movie is that it shows that growing up and coming of age has its own challenges which can be awkward as well as heartbreaking but still beautiful. In addition, the movie is relatable, interesting and very enlightening. It has an unbelievable cast and involves people of different age groups together. The movie also has a twist that makes altogether dramatic and educational. My favourite part of the movie is the part that Lady Bird’s (Saoirse Ronan) family takes her to a Mexican restaurant after she graduates from her high school to congratulate her on going to Davis which was the name of the university they all think she is going to. This part is my favourite because despite all the pressure Lady Bird gets from her family, she still follows her own heart and judgement by applying to the University of New York (Hans, 2018).

However, this part has the implicit meaning of defiance and disobedience among teenagers and the complications of a mother-daughter relationship. The implicit meaning makes me feel differently about this scene in the movie. This is because I believe that Lady Bird has the right to her own happiness. She has the right to choose what she wants in life and follow her dreams and all her mother could have done is be supportive and offer advice. The other way cultural invisibility plays out in the movie is through feminism. This is well depicted through the whole process of a woman coming of age. The movie shows Lady Bird going through her senior year in high school as an adolescent and going through her rites of passage such as losing her virginity.
In addition, there are some elements of the movie such as grace and forgiveness that worked really well. Grace kept Lady Bird’s family going and helps them to never give up the fight. Forgiveness is what keeps the family together and makes them complete. These two elements work so great because the movie is based on a family setting full of family crises. Similarly, there are some parts in the movie Lady Bird where implicit is well used. For example, the part where Lady Bird lies to one of her wealthy friends that she lives at a bigger house. The society sees the size of the house and people’s possession as grounds to judge other people.
Therefore, when I formally analyse a movie scene, I look for the theme and the message the movie is trying to bring out, that is, the deeper meaning of the scene. However, there are some other alternative approaches to analysis which include looking at the movie’s structure and form which basically concentrates on the internal evidence. This approach tells about characters going through different experiences of growing, changing and developing throughout the movie (Jacobs, 2018). So far, I have discovered that learning what a movie is all about is very challenging because there are so many hidden meanings and messages in a movie. Basically, there is more than just what meets the eye.
