Prompt 1: Individualism

Whitney Houston

I’m Every Woman

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7_sqdkaAfo

I ain't braggin' 'cause I am the one You just ask me, ooh, it shall be done And don't bother to compare, I've got it” ( Houston, 1978).

The entire song focuses on Whitney Houston as a representative of every woman. How she expresses her lyrics shows that she is the only point of focus for her audience and listener. The lyrics above especially demonstrate individualism as the artist entirely focuses on herself and why she is the center of attention. She expresses how she has everything and probably no other woman has the power that she has. The lyrics demonstrate expressive individualism because the artist does not care about what everyone else feels about her. She expresses how she can give whatever is asked and that the individual the lyrics are directed to needs not to compare her to others because she has it all.

Prompt 2: Individualism and Consumerism

The story of stuff

From the video, I identify that those who with significant power across the world and in our communities make it seem like they are working for our benefit. In reality, these individuals and corporations make everything that is right seems wrong and many resources inaccessible so that the rest of us run to what they provide which is toxic and poisonous for us and our planet. Consumerism encourages the hoarding of resources for those who can access them easily. It means that the rest get leftovers which are not of the best quality. It also means that the few who can access these resources consume everything, including what they need to conserve to help preserve humanity. Therefore consumerism is a problem. In the reading, consumerism is encouraged through the provision of the various beliefs of consumerism. These include the belief that is accumulating things results in fulfillment; money translates to power and much more (Wilkens & Sanford, 2010). The video, however, discourages consumerism right from the beginning by showing how it costs humanity.

What I will change is how I relate to the environment. I believe that those with power in society are constantly making steps that enrich them while depleting nature of its riches. I will focus on preserving nature in my small way, including planting trees, cleaning, and reusing. Such activities move away from the thoughts of consumerism and encourage environmental conservation, which in turn favors human survival.
