In view of the discussion board post in question, ‘hate crimes’ are rampant in the United States. In fact, the law makers realized people can be driven by negative opinions, intolerance and stereotypical influences to implicate others, and resolved to come up with laws to curb the tendency. For instance, Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, 2009 was quite helpful in the fight against hate crimes. Specifically, this law awarded federal officers the power to take up hate crimes that local officers decide to abandon. In the same vein, this law established that statistics regarding hate crimes have to be tracked. By so doing, the authority is in a position to determine the extent at which hate crimes have become persistent, and appropriate means of curbing it. Proper laws are needed to ensure that the blacks are not criminalized by the whites based on color. Unfortunately, white women are the most notorious in implicating the black men, at the slightest provocation. Without proper laws, such individuals can end up in jail for mistakes they never committed. For instance, in the case of "Barbeque Becky", a white woman calls the police because some black men were having a barbeque on the lake. Such actions goes a long way in showing that, hate crimes are taking place in the society, and only proper laws can such weird and outrageous tendencies. Having a party at the lake is a non-criminal act. The act of associating the people of color with bad acts should be punishable by law.

In view of this post, I concur that the best way to curb hate crimes is through establishing effective and strong laws. Although laws are in place to curb this menace, more effort is needed because stereotypical assumptions and other forms of fabrications regarding people of color keep on emerging. This explains why most black people are the majority in the US prisons, serving sentences for minor crimes against the whites. Unfortunately, it appears the system is already set to believe everything the whites have against the blacks. The officer talking to the lady in "Barbeque Becky" handles the issue with the somberness it deserves. She explained effectively that the black men were simply having a good time. It does not mean that the bad things happening at the lake are the perpetrators. In the same vein, I am in full support of the law allowing the Federal Bureau Investigators to take up abandoned cases regarding hate crimes. Specifically, this requirement is an indication that the government is equally committed towards the fight against hate crimes. Clearly, without investing in such laws, the Federal government will find it difficult to curb this menace. The remaining part that needs to be emphasized is to sensitize the blacks about these forms of crime. The move will ensure that most of them do not end up behind bars, simply because a white woman implicated them in a minor offence they never committed. In often cases, people suffer for lack of knowledge, and unless proper communication and sensitization is done, the problem will be far from over.
