Chapter 12 focuses on religion as it is practiced in different societies around the world. As indicated, no one knows for sure when religion began with various speculations given for its onset. The different theoretical perspectives identify the functions and influences that religious behavior has on the people. For instance, animism became the earliest form of religion when individuals sought to understand event that could not be explained by daily experiences. It is evident that religion influences and upholds social control through moral and ethical beliefs. According to Bivins (2018) Christianity has been observed to influence politics as broadcasting networks and television provide news coverage and reach out to millions of Americans on the events taking place in the country and the world. These occurrences are explained from a Biblical perspective to guide the behavior of believers. However, due to the monetary gain associated with these networks and the churches, many of the evangelists and pastors lead lives contrary to what they preach.
Chapter 13 focuses on art by describing it as objects or events with qualities that provide aesthetic experience. For this reason, literature, music, visual and theater arts are all included as some of its major examples. Artwork has been defined as something that stimulates an individual and sustains contemplation. Therefore, different art forms can be used to help instill emotions that are associated with religion creating a connection between the two societal concepts. According to Griffin (2018) the recent Met Gala caused a stir amongst conservatives as it was identified as religious appropriation with other calling it blasphemous. The annual event which held for the benefit of raising funds from Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City hosted numerous celebrities dressed in religious attire. For instance, Rihanna was dressed like the Pope while Katy Perry wore angel’s wings.
