‘Avatar’ a movie directed by James Cameron revolves around the lives of two states or nations, one that people lived in harmony and with peace while the other where people were not at peace. The movie shows the earth where the resources have been depleted and there is a crisis or war while there is the other place, known as ‘Pandora’ which is inhabited by human-like creatures who live in unity. These creatures live in peace and also have their goddess whom they worship. They are enjoying their life and hence the humans want to find out what exists in this other world. They look for a way of invading the ‘Pandora’ escalating a war between the two worlds. The movie is one of the films that try to depict the lifestyle that existed between the Americans and the Middle East. It shows how people can overcome racism; stop the terrorism that existed between the two nations and how the political environment can be dealt with (Abee, 2012). In this paper, I will discuss the effects of war on both the Americans and the people of Middle East as depicted in the movie “Avatar” by James Cameron.

Destruction of lives is one of the major effects of the war between the creatures that lived on earth and the other world shown in the movie. Pandora might represent the people of the Middle East while the earth represents the American people. The people of Middle East lived at peace but the peace was interrupted later on. The Middle East was invaded and hence the people felt like their peace and laws had been breached. The people fought and hence so many lives were lost, many more others were injured. The United States might have wanted the possession of the resources that existed in the Middle East especially oil. Oil has over the years been the leading cause of conflict between the Americans and the Middle East. The two nations have been fighting for the possession of the oil reserves. The fight led to the loss of many lives especially in 1998 where the Middle East bombed the U.S embassies claiming thousands of lives (Colgan, 2013).

Apart from destruction of lives, there is also destruction of the environment and the habitats of the people. Pandora was a place where people lived with peace and picked up lessons even from the animals. They all concentrated on survival and not who is superior and inferior. The Na’vi which is the other world, earthly, where people live based on superiority has less peace and thus invades the peaceful destroying their environment. The movie communicates a clear message that, for there to be peace in a country, then people need to put aside their differences and concentrate on learning from each other. The people of Middle East and the Americans needed to set aside their differences perhaps hold a talk and decide on the best solution rather than engaging in a fight that claimed both their environment and their lives. ‘Avatar’ (Colgan, 2013) clearly passes the message of peace and understanding to its viewers as the ways to stop war and disagreement.

The fight against racism was also an effect of the war that occurred between the two nations. Despite the disagreement that existed between the earthly creatures and those that lived in Pandora, there was emergence of relationships and love affairs. They breached their differences and expressed their emotions to each other. This was an indicator of overcoming race issues that existed, most especially with the Americans (Yew, 2007). Racism has over the years been a topic of discussion and there are several ways in which it is expressed. One of the ways is how one race or people feel superior and should be in charge of some resources thus creating a disagreement. The movie was a good example of how people of different races can express their feelings towards each other despite the fight that exists thus contributing to the end or reduction of racism (Abee, 2012). The movie passes a message that people or humans should look beyond the human flesh, the skin tone and the place where the individual comes from. They should look at the moral values upheld by an individual, their personality and the characters that one has. Courage and selflessness are just two of the characteristics that people should look for in an individual and not make judgments’ based on one’s skin color. Racism has so many negative effects and hence the movie plays a critical role in trying to overcome it.

The movie is also trying to communicate a message of rebelling to the people of the Middle East. If a stranger interrupts with your peace or your way of living, then someone will tend to act back with similar violence or resist whatever changes they want to make. The Americans might have interrupted the way of life of people in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq and they reacted back with violence or war. I believe they did not think of the consequences of the war or rather they did not care about the destruction the war or invasion might have caused to the countries and their citizens. Therefore, there is a message of resistance or rebellion that the movie communicates. Cameron seems to tell or insight the people to act back thus causing destruction of both the environment and the lives of people (Yew, 2007). The Americans seem to have interrupted with the way of life of the people and hence the people of Middle east did not like. With this, they acted back and there was a war between the two nations claiming lots of lives and property.

The war might was an eye opener to the people of Middle East and the light to change in the countries of the Middle East. The Americans wanted to stop the way the people were being led and set up a democratic state where the people enjoyed the resources of their land despite the Americans benefiting too. They wanted to see positive changes in the Middle East. The people did not realize the benefits of collaborating with any other country. They had their own interests at heart and hence did not want any interruptions from strangers. The movie tries to pass a message of agreement and working in unison with a foreign state provided the livelihoods of the people are improved. Countries and leaders need to look on the positive side of things and not make fast reactions. The message communicated by Cameron in the movie is that of discouraging violence and war. He shows in detail the negative effects of war on the countries or individuals involved. He passes a message of peace to all people (Abee, 2012).

In conclusion, Cameron communicates clearly the effects of war on humanity. He demonstrates the loss of lives and property, how it can be a breakthrough to the end of racism, how it can contribute to resistance and rebellion and above all how it can be an eye opener to different people. The movies discusses the importance of being human and the contribution people should give to the environment they live in. people need to protect both the environment and the people they live with.
