The American society is full of diversity following the many people from a variety of culture living there. It is among the nations with highly diverse workplaces. There may arise several barriers during communication in the workplaces and this may need to be addressed to ensure peace and harmony among the workmates. This paper addresses the dimensions of national culture.
Power Distance Index dimension expresses the fact that all individuals in various societies are not equal. It helps knowing how societies address inequalities among people. In Australia, people strive to create an equality in power distribution as compared to the US where people accept that everyone has a place in the hierarchical order and there is no need of justification (Hofstede et al, 50). Long Term Orientation versus Short Term Normative Orientation views that each society has to maintain certain links with the past whereas dealing with the problems of the future and present.

The US encourages efforts and thrifts in the modern education to help in preparation for the future. Oppositely, Australia prefers to maintain past norms and traditions while observing the change in society. Masculinity versus Femininity expresses that the society may prefer the masculine side in success, achievement, assertiveness and heroism. Femininity stands for the modest and they care for the weak. The Kenyan society has more preference on the male as compared to the US in which there is more equality.
In my encounter, the tools used were; making efforts to keep the conversations simple clear and unambiguous. Misunderstandings were avoided by assuming difference until was similarity was established. More so, observing what was being said and done rather interpreting. Techniques in reducing misunderstandings are; having a basic understanding on the cultural diversity and getting help to help in translation when needed (Henderson et al, 51). Indeed culture plays a major role in ensuring effective communication and societies should strive to ensure that there is equality by appreciating and understanding different cultures.
