Malpractice lawsuits among registered nurses and healthcare practitioners, in general, have increased in the recent past. The cost of such lawsuits is extremely high and may inconvenience any nurse in the course of their profession. Therefore, it is a prerogative of every nurse to ensure that they avoid such malpractice lawsuits. I plan to adopt several strategies in my practice as a registered nurse to ensure that I do not encounter any malpractice lawsuits.
First, I intend to communicate with patients always and build a healthy relationship with all my patients. This strategy will help me get the expectations of the patients and hence put such expectations and needs into consideration while offering healthcare. Majority of the suits against registered nurses arise from a misunderstanding between the patients and the nurse. In my case, communication will help me avoid such misunderstanding and create transparency in offering healthcare.

Secondly, I plan to document all my engagements with the patient. Such documentation will help me justify all the nursing decisions that I take with every patient. I will consistently ask myself the question what if I am required to justify the decision or action I took with the patient in any given nursing scenario. Therefore, clear documentation will help me to defend my actions and decisions and hence avoid lawsuits.
Lastly, I plan to update myself with changes in the legal requirements that govern the practice of nursing. When I move, I will familiarize myself with the legal requirement in that state. Such an understanding will help me to abide by the laws of those states and avoid any possible lawsuits. The actions that I have identified will be sufficient in helping me avoid malpractice lawsuits.
